Nardi Tailor & Dry Cleaners To Be Replaced By Tanning Salon On Smith?

Want to get rid of that sickly winter pallor? All you have to do is to head on over to Smith Street here in Carroll Gardens.
The Tanning Room just moved from Court Street to 317 Smith Street and is celebrating its grand re-opening by offering one month of unlimited tanning for $69.

I know that those UV-free tanning beds are supposed to be safe, but I am not sure I would want to take a chance with my skin.
Am I just being silly?

Nardi Tailor & Dry Cleaners To Be Replaced By Tanning Salon On Smith?

Nardi, the tailor, alterations, dry cleaner place at 317 Smith Street closed its doors about a week ago, but it took me a few days to get over there to take the photos above.
The place has been there for quite a while and it is sad to see the storefront empty. I popped my head into the shoe repair place next door to find out what happened. I was told that Nardi retired and that a tanning salon is moving in.
Say what? A tanning place? Is that what this neighborhood really needs? There is one just a block away at Court and Union, above the health food store.
A tailor was just a wee bit more useful.

El Nuevo Portal Closed By Health Department

El Nuevo Portal, that delightfully authentic, no-frills Dominican restaurant at 317 Smith Street has been closed by the Health Department on September 24th. Reader Stephen B. had sent me an email on Thursday, but I did not get around to checking it out myself until Sunday.
A look on the Health Department's web site did not offer any clues, since the latest inspection report has not been posted yet. Back in May 2009, Nuevo Portal scored a 36. A restaurant with a score of 28 or more needs to be re-inspected. A follow up visit on June 10th, earned the restaurant a very respectable 8, so obviously, everything was in order. It is hard to imagine that conditions could have deteriorated so much in three months to warrant a closure.

A hand written note stuck to the front window says that the place will be closed five days. That would mean that Nuevo will re-open on Monday. I hope that by then, the problems found by the department have been resolved.
