Would you like to help Red Hook get some much needed help after all the problems the neighborhood faced after Hurricane Sandy?  It only takes a minute and a few clicks on your computer.
Matthew of Mazzone Hardware has made us aware of a new program by Benjamin Moore entitled "Neighborhood Matters" that allows you to choose a main street to revitalize.
He has provided the information below:
Benjamin Moore Paints has just announced the launching of “Main Street Matters”, an all-expense-paid program provided FREE to spruce up rows of properties located in twenty communities throughout North America.
When Benjamin Moore announced this program, the Mazzone family - serving the hardware and paint needs of Carroll Gardens and the surrounding communities since 1950 - immediately launched its own campaign to include Red Hood on the list of selected communities being considered for this great opportunity.
What’s needed now is for people to go online and vote for Red Hook. The twenty communities that will be chosen as the most in need of revitalization will be based solely on the amount of votes received.
Considering what the Red Hook community has suffered in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, this could be one more way we can all come to the aid of our neighbors in need. Just look at what Benjamin Moore is willing to do.
Benjamin Moore will not only provide the paint and supplies needed for facades, railings, and other exterior building trims, but will also provide color experts to consult on the best choices to enhance the architectural style, regional influences and historic references in each community. And in addition, this program will put local professional painters to work – again, all paid for by Benjamin Moore.
Please, click on this link and vote. Thank you.http://www.paintwhatmatters.com
The map of North America immediately comes up.Locate and click on NY, next click on Red Hook, and finally click on Vote Now. ALL DONE!
Voting ends at midnight June 30th.You can cast a vote once every 24 hours(You can only vote once every 24 hours when usingthe same email address and/or same computer.)
You can find all the pertinent information here.

Let's make this happen for Red Hook, friends.  Don't forget to spread the news and encourage others to vote as well.

Mazzone's current sign
and future sign
Here is some news about Mazzone, the family- run hardware store at 470 Court Street in Carroll Gardens. In an email Matt Mazzone writes:
After 40 years with True Value, we are in the process of switching over to ACE hardware. I've attached an image of our new sign, which should hopefully be going up in the next few weeks. Our infamous tools that are going up the side of the building will also be refurbished at the same time. Sometime in the spring, we'll be painting the building and probably doing some work on our storefront as well.
Little by little we have been letting our customers know, but I'm sure there are going to be a lot of people wondering what is going on when they see the new sign go up. So for the record - we did not change ownership, and as much as I tried, I couldn't convince any of the hardware stores in Hawaii or the Caribbean to switch places with me =).
Glad to know that you aren't going anywhere despite the rein and the snow, Matt. Couldn't imagine Mazzone Hardware anywhere else but right here in Carroll Gardens.

I never got a chance to walk by Mazzone's 7th Annual Pumpkinfest this past Saturday, since I was busy at the Carroll Park clean-up. Apparently, the fest, which was organized with the help of the Court Street Merchants Association, was a huge success, drawing quite a crowd from the neighborhood.  Matt Mazzone was kind enough to send me the photos above. Sorry I missed it...

No, no. Vince Mazzone and his family have not sold out to Puzzo, as the new signs and awning in front of their hardware store would indicate. After all, the Mazzones have operated their hardware store at this location for decades and they aren't going anywhere.
The signage, as Vince explained in an email he sent around yesterday is just a movie prop for a new TV show entitled Over/Under, about a day trader who has a gambling problem. Vince Mazzone writes:
Should you be passing the corner of 4th Place & Court Street at any time on Tuesday or Wednesday (Aug. 30th & 31st) and notice a new outdoor sign on our building and a new family name on the sign - WE ARE NOT SELLING OUR BUSINESS.
On Tuesday, a TV production company will be modifying the look of our store (both inside and outside) for the Wednesday filming of several segments of a new TV series -Over/Under.
On Tuesday we will be open for business-as-usual.
On Wednesday we will be closed for the entire day. We will have staff members positioned outside for customers who may have questions. And as usual, our Paint Center located at 211 Smith Street in Cobble Hill will be open
from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Mazzone's, the family run hardware store on Court Street, always put together quite a party for Halloween. This year was no exception and judging by the many young families who carved and decorated their newly purchased pumpkin amidst some pretty scary decorations, this fest was a huge success.

If you can't get Upstate to pick that perfect pumpkin to carve this fall, why not stay right here in Carroll Gardens and stop by Mazzone's Annual Pumpkin Fest?

The nice folks at the best neighborhood hardware store always put together a great Halloween event for young neighborhood families.
So mark your calendar and be!
