On this cold, clear November morning, many in Carroll Gardens assembled around the War Memorial in Carroll Park to honor our veterans.The simple, but moving ceremony has become a yearly event thanks to Friends of Carroll Park and Court Street Merchants Association. After a wonderful rendition of the National Anthem by Christian Branch, a wreath was laid in front of the monument by neighborhood veterans.
Assemblywoman Joan Millman, Councilman Brad Lander, Senator Squadron and a representative for Borough President Marty Markowitz also attended.  Millman and Lander reminded everyone of the importance of honoring and helping our veterans of the past, but also those who are currently coming home after active duty.  Lander stated that it was time to recommit ourselves to our veterans.
"There is something wrong when 17% of our homeless are veterans."

No matter if you believe, like me, that not all military interventions are justified, the men and women who gave their lives for this country should be honored, especially on Memorial Day.

A group of Carroll Gardeners set aside some time on Monday to gather in front of the War Memorial in Carroll Park for a short ceremony and wreath-laying organized by the Court Street Merchants, the Friends Of Carroll Park. Assemblywoman Joan Millman also attended and reminded us that we are not ensured our liberty. Rather, freedom is something to be achieved through involvement and through voting in order to preserve our democracy.

It was great turn-out of young and old and the ceremony was very moving.

I cannot think of a better way to commemorate this day than to make you aware of a wonderful, thought provoking interview in The Sun with war veteran Paul Chappell on the need to end wars, entitled "Fighting With Another Purpose." It should be required reading for everyone on Memorial Day.

Veterans Thanked During Ceremony In Carroll Park

The Court Street Merchants Association and the Friends of Carroll Park organized a Veterans Day ceremony at the World War 1 monument in Carroll Park.Our past and present military men and woman were thanked for their service and those who made the ultimate sacrifice were honored. Our elected officials, Councilman Brad Lander, and State Senator Daniel Squadron expressed their thanks to the veterans present and to the organizers of the event.

Pastor Rodriguez led the assembled in the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem and presented a prayer for all of our soldiers, especially those with physical, psychological, and spiritual injuries.

The event was well received by the public and we are all committed to continue the effort.
