Cobble Hill School Hosts
“Eat Pie and Shop” on December 5th

On December 5, PS 29 in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, will host the first annual “Eat Pie and Shop” Holiday Gift Fair and Pie Social (www.eatpieandshop.org). To benefit the school and neighboring PS 8 in Brooklyn Heights, proceeds from this family-friendly Holiday event will support the schools’ PTAs.

The Gift Fair will highlight local artisans, craftspeople and merchants, and promises to provide a wide array of handmade, local and sustainable gift-giving choices, from jewelry by Virginia Galvan (www.virginiagalvan.com), to handmade wool hats by Nadege Brunacci (www.hatsbynadege.com), to toys and books by Fork + Pencil (www.forkandpencil.com) and Half Pint Citizens (www.halfpintcitizens.com). Nearly two dozen vendors will be displaying and selling their wares.

To keep your energy up during your shopping trip, fortify yourself with homemade pie. Local bakers – amateurs and professionals – will supply pies for the Pie Social. For a $5 tasting ticket, the public can sample two pieces of pie of their choosing. Bakers are also invited to bring pies, and a friendly competition will begin at 9:30 a.m.

And while you shop, Rooftop Films will show a selection of independent short films for kids at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm. Tickets to the movies are $2. In addition, children can make free holiday crafts – perhaps an ornament or a frame as a present for Mom and Dad.

Melanie Raneri Woods, Principal of PS 29, said, “We are thrilled to host the first annual Eat Pie and Shop event. It’s nice to have this wonderful alternative to all the holiday craze, one where children and adults can spend some time together, and the fantastic arts programs at our public schools benefit.”

Canadian Geese Invade Brooklyn's Parade Ground

I know that this has nothing to do with Carroll Gardens, but on an early morning walk on Monday, I came across this large flock of Canadian geese at the Parade Ground, next to Prospect Park.
In the spring and fall, kids play soccer here. Now, the geese have taken over.
The sight was a bit unexpected, this being the city, after all.

State Senator Squadron To Host Town Hall Meeting About The F Train

F Stands for...

If you think the F train service leaves lots to be desired, you are not alone. Overcrowding, re-routing and outages are a constant annoyance for local commuters. When State Senator Daniel Squadron took office in January 2009, he promised to work on the problem and asked the MTA to review the F line. The results were made public in October. Now, the senator is inviting the community to a town hall meeting on the subject. Below is more info from the senator's office:

This past summer, State Senator Squadron called on the MTA to conduct a full line review of the F Train in response to the many constituent complaints he received regarding ongoing service problems. In October, the MTA released the findings from this review in a comprehensive report (which you can find on Senator Squadron's website at: www.squadron.nysenate.gov).

To make this report even more accessible to the public, Senator Daniel Squadron and Community Boards 2 & 6 invite you to attend a Town Hall Meeting about the F train. MTA representatives will discuss the recent report about F train performance, and discuss proposals for improving service.

Cobble Hill And Carroll Gardens Walking Tours With 'Lost City' Blogger

Friend and fellow blogger Brooks Of Sheffield over at 'Lost City,' recently hosted a walking tour of Carroll Gardens West. The walk was such a success that Brooks decided to add a tour of Cobble Hill on December 13th and one of Carroll Gardens Proper on December 20th. Both start at 11 AM.

According to Brooks, he "will not be relating the history you find in books (well, maybe a little), but leaning toward hidden history, forgotten incidents, eccentric facts, as well as focusing on elements of the living past as much as possible."

The tours are about 90 minutes to 2 hours long, the cost is $20. They will be limited to about 15 people each, so book early.

Given Brooks' love of history and local lore, I am sure that his tours are quite fascinating. (I am hoping to attend the one of Carroll Gardens.)

I would like to add that it was SO refreshing to me to find a boutique in the area that isn't seriously overpriced. Though I've not bought anything there, the prices didn't leave me feeling like I'd need to take out a second mortgage to buy a shirt. The staff was very friendly and seemed excited to be there. I hope other stores very nearby will follow suit.
