New 4-Story Building For Corner Of Smith And DeGraw

A new 4 story, 4 unit building is planned for the corner of Smith and DeGraw Streets. The architect for the new construction at 337 DeGraw Street is Darris Krumpus of Borough Architects and the contractor is Jepol Construction of Woodside.

The building will be 60 feet wide and will have 4 units. No mention of a commercial space at ground level.

An old garage that once stood on one part of the lot at 337 DeGraw has been taken down a while ago and in June 2010, the side lot windows of the house next door were cinder-blocked off.

As the heavy construction equipment and new fence would indicate, construction will soon start in ernest.

A quick glance at Borough Architects' web site would indicate that the new building will most probably sport lots of glass.

Thanks to the 2010 Carroll Gardens Contextual re-zoning, there is a 50 foot height limit on the new construction.

Creep Slashes Tires Of Multiple Cars Parked Along Carroll Park, But Police Hands Out Parking Ticket Anyway

Last night, some creep slashed the tires of quite a few cars which were parked on along Carroll Park. A President Street resident reported that at least 10 cars on either side of the block between Court and President Streets has flat tires. Later reports suggested that more cars on the Court and Carroll Street sides of the park were also attacked.
The 76th Precinct was informed and a police car was on the scene.

When I walked past 20 minutes later, a policewoman was issuing a parking ticket to the Mini Cooper above because of Alternate Side Parking. I stopped to talk to the officer, pointed to the flat tire and explained about the slashing. "Oh, I know about it." I suggested that maybe, it was rather cruel to give the owner a ticket under the circumstance. She hesitated for a second but then said that since she had already started filling out the ticket, she needed to finish writing it.

EPA Invites Community To Discuss Gowanus Canal Remedial Investigation Report

I have slowly read my way through the Gowanus Canal Remedial Investigation Report, which was released by the Environmental Protection Agency just last week. The report confirmed the widespread presence of contaminants such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The sediment also included high level of metals including mercury, lead and copper. These contaminants are dangerous to human health, especially if they get in contact with the canal water and the sediment, or if they eat fish and crabs from the Gowanus.

What keeps on going through my mind while I read the report is how New York City was willing to rezone the shores of the Gowanus Canal to include residential housing before a comprehensive clean-up like the one which will be designed by the EPA to address these dangerous contaminants. And my mind goes back to all the public meetings involving the Toll Brothers' spot rezoning for two blocks on Bond Street, which was eventually granted to them by the New York City Council.

For many in the community, the results of the EPA's in-depth investigation just confirmed what they already knew. The contaminants in the polluted waterway pose a risk to humans and need to be removed before more residents move to the shores of the Gowanus.

The EPA will explain their findings at a public meeting on February 23rd. Read below:

Relax! Starbucks On Court Street Reopening Very, Very Soon

Patrons of the Starbucks at 167 Court Street at the corner of Dean Street seemed slightly panicked to find the doors closed yesterday. And at first glance, it certainly looked like the place had closed its doors for good. The table and chairs had been pushed into the center and everything was covered in plastic. But not to worry, this particular location of the popular coffee house chain is just getting a facelift. Workers were painting and spackling inside and I sign on the window states that the place will reopen on Wednesday.

Besides, there is another Starbucks just one short block away on Smith.
