The first lecture is entitled "Volunteer, Tutor and Mentor: There Ways To Stay Involved And Get Engaged In Your Golden Years!" and will be led by Lisa Catanzaro, L.C.S.W.,

Estate Planning Seminar For The Sandwich Generation At Carroll Gardens Library

No doubt the topic of estate planning for the sandwich generation will be of interest to many here in the neighborhood. If you haven't already delved into the subject, this seminar, held at the Carroll Gardens Library might be just what you need to get started.

STATE PLANNING FOR THE SANDWICH GENERATION: A SEMINAR AT THE CARROLL GARDENS LIBRARY

Sandwiched between responsibilities: caring for your children, as well as worrying about an elderly family member? Statistics show that nearly 10 million Americans are considered to be a part of the “Sandwich Generation”, with over 25% of American families being involved in both child and elder care at the same time. And while it may not seem possible to add one more item to an overstuffed to-do list, estate planning is all about “being prepared”. Financial planner Kerri Kimball is joined by attorney Alison Arden Besunder on March 6, 6:30 p.m. at the Carroll Gardens Library for a comprehensive discussion of the ins and outs of essential documents which are frequently procrastinated on.
Nearly every family has taboos about talking about money. But now is the time to tackle these issues so that our loved ones aren’t left in the dark. Some simple steps taken now can provide peace of mind that our families’ finances are secure,” says financial planner Kerri Kimball.
Topics discussed will first and foremost include how to discuss estate planning issues with elderly relatives. As many participants have children of their own, choosing a guardian to take care of your children and your children’s assets will be addressed as well. And everyone needs to protect the ability to make health care decisions. The special needs of non-citizens or dual citizens will be included.

Justine, is a native and current resident of Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn who volunteers with the Friends of the Carroll Gardens Library. Chris has been a resident of Carroll Gardens for the past seven years and has a family-owned retail boutique on Court Street. Also hosting is the Friends of the Carroll Gardens Library.

Free NY Writers Coalition Drop-In Workshop at Carroll Gardens Library

In response to Hurricane Sandy, the NY Writers Coalition, one of the largest community writing organizations in the country, will be providing free creative writing workshops throughout New York City. One such workshops will be held at the Carroll Gardens Library right here in the neighborhood.

Open to writers of all genres — poetry, fiction, memoir, whatever you want to write. All levels of experience are welcome and no advance sign-up is necessary. 

NY Writers Coalition, has gotten involved with the Hurricane Sandy recovery effort by way of what we do best: writing workshops. In response to the storm, we decided to provide a space for people to find community and write in a supportive environment. So, we launched a handful of new free, drop-in workshops last week in shelters, libraries, and other community spaces and have more in the works in Red Hook and Coney Island. 

The writing group is facilitated by a member of the community who also lives in Carroll Gardens, and we really hope that this will be a great space for folks to get together and do a little writing and storytelling.

Carroll Gardens Library Knitting Group Resumes Get-Togethers

 After having been closed for roof repair all summer long, the Carroll Gardens Public
 Library at 396 Carroll Street reopened last week. Along with its regular scheduled events, the Knitting Group will resume their classes at the library on Tuesday , Sept. 11, at 4:00 PM.

In addition, the Friends Of Carroll Gardens Library will hold their next meeting on Wednesday, September 19 at 6:30 Pm downstairs.

The Carroll Gardens Library will be temporarily close for roof repair starting on June 16th.  In preparation for the work, scaffolding is currently being put up.

Best Selling Author Patrick Taylor To Come To Carroll Gardens Public Library In Exclusive Appearance

Bestselling author Patrick Taylor, best known for his “Irish Country” series, will visit  the Carroll Gardens branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, 396 Clinton Street, on Wednesday, February 29 at 7 p.m. for an exclusive appearance to discuss and sign his novels. The event is hosted by Friends Of The Carroll Gardens Library. The group writes:

 “We are so excited that Patrick Taylor will be visiting not only the library, but Brooklyn for this event,” says Friends of the Carroll Gardens Library secretary and event organizer Diane Saarinen. “We can only hope our ‘little village’ of Carroll Gardens is half as interesting as the Ballybucklebo that Taylor depicts in his colorful novels.”

Taylor , author of the bestselling An Irish Country Village, A Dublin Student Doctor and more, is also looking forward to the February 29 event: “Although I have visited New York often, I am really looking forward to my first visit to Brooklyn--even if Ebbets Field is gone and the Trolley Dodgers who hired Jackie Robinson in 1947 have long been in LA,” the author says. “And where better to go than a library in a borough that has 58 branches of its Public Library system? I hope what I have to say will be interesting and entertaining.”

“I am so excited that Arthur Phillips and Guerilla Shakespeare will be coming to the library for this event,” says Friends of the Carroll Gardens Library president Nina Guralnick.  “Our Friends group is committed to programming enriching activities for the community. All ages are welcome. Enjoy a multicultural celebration with free activities and treats to celebrate the start of the Library's annual Summer Reading program!

About the program: The Summer Reading program and its new interactive website is a great way to connect with others who like to read, while reading at your own pace. Friends of the Carroll Gardens Library (FCGL) recently signed its charter and their mission is to support the library by fundraising and to help make the Carroll Gardens branch a center of the community with programs for children, youth and adults all year round.

With budget cuts and closings, community libraries are under siege. Active community participation working closely with the library staff can make a huge difference for the Carroll Gardens branch.

FCGL’s first big fundraiser will be a huge book sale on Saturday, May 14, Love Your Library Day, from 10 AM-4 PM. The community is invited to get great deals on thousands of books, enjoy free entertainment including arts and crafts, and music from Karen K & the Jitterbugs, and grab a snack at the bake sale! Assemblywoman Joan Millman, a former school teacher and librarian, will be on hand to greet the crowd and do a reading.

Screening Of "Earth 2100" At The Carroll Gardens Library

The Friends And Residents Of Greater Gowanus (F.R.O.G.G.) and the New York City Sierra Club are inviting the community to a screening of "Earth 2100," a documentary film first presented by ABC Television in 2009.

Hosted by Bob Woodruff, "the two-hour special explored what a worst-case future might look like if humans do not take action on current or impending problems that could threaten civilization. The problems addressed in the program include climate change, overpopulation, and misuse of energy resources." (Wikipedia)
