Thanks To Smith Street Stage, Shakespeare's 'Caesar' Comes Alive In Carroll Park

For the next two weeks, Carroll Park will become a giant outdoor theatre as Smith Street Stage, a wonderful Brooklyn-based theatre company, performs Shakespeare's drama "Julius Caesar".

The production premiered in Carroll Park this past Friday night and though it rained sporadically all through the evening, it was a flawless performance. The audience, young and old was transfixed as the professional actors brought to life the story of the conspiracy against Roman dictator Julius Caesar, his assassination and the subsequent defeat of the conspirators at the Battle of Philippi.

The play is masterfully directed by Jonathan Hopkins and Jessica Weiss, who make use of every part of the park. Sarah Dacey Charles puts a convincing present day face on Caesar. Joby Earle perfectly portrays Brutus' inner struggle as he chooses between loyalty to Caesar or to the Roman Republic. Pete McElligott is brilliant as Mark Anthony.

"Julius Caesar" will be performed in Carroll Park for free through July 14th. Performances start at 7 PM. Bring your own chairs..and the kids.

Smith Street Stage Brings "Julius Caesar" To Carroll Park

Get ready for intrigue, betrayal, and murder in Carroll Park. 
Smith Street Stage a wonderful theater company based in Brooklyn, is bringing Shakespeare's Julius Caesar to Carroll Park. And it's totally free. All you have to do is bring your own seating to the outdoor performance.

This is Smith Street Stage's fourth Shakespeare production in our neighborhood park. In years past, the group performed 'Romeo and Juliet' (2010), 'Macbeth' (2011) and 'Twelfth Night' (2012).

According to Smith Street Stage, the company hires "professional actors with Shakespeare training and experience, and accompany the shows with live, original music. Our design always features modern dress and our staging involves full use of the park". 

This thoroughly modern production of "Julius Caesar" will feature  actress Sarah Dacey Charles as Julius (Juliette?) Caesar. The play is directed by Jonathan Hopkins and Jessica Weiss.

It's bound to be wonderful, so don't miss it. And bring the kids.

Looking Forward To Spring: 'Friends Of Carroll Park' Planning Another Great Season In Third-Oldest Park In Brooklyn

There may be a blizzard in the forecast for this week-end, but Friends of Carroll Park, the nonprofit organization dedicated to helping maintain and improve our neighborhood park, is gearing up for spring and summer. The all-volunteer group just announced a great line-up of events and volunteer opportunities for the 2013 season. So grab you calendar and mark down the dates below and get involved in your community.

MONTHLY MEETINGS RESUME MARCH 7th

It's almost time for us to come out of hibernation, and we hope you'll join us to map out a terrific season of programs, events, and volunteer activities when we resume our monthly meetings in March. Unless otherwise specified, we'll hold them at 7:30 p.m. the first Thursday of every month inside the Robert Acito Park House until the end of the year, so please make it part of your monthly routine!

Smith Street Stage, a theatre group based in Carroll Gardens, has adapted Charles Dickens' perennial classic into a live radio play set in the 1930's and have transformed the park house into an intimate little playhouse, complete with period decor, christmas lights and sparkling tree. Seven actors slip effortlessly into the roles of thirty-four characters and take turns creating special sound effects to accentuate the tale.

The actors are superb. Patrick McCarthy plays mean-spirited miser Ebenezer Scrooge who amends his avaricious ways to perfection. Charlie Kravits is a wonderful Tiny Tim and Jonathan Hopkins' portrayal of kind-hearted over-worked, under appreciated clerk Bob Cratchit is just right.

In the past, Smith Street Stage has brought 'Romeo and Juliet', 'Macbeth' and "Twelfth Night" to Carroll Park.

'Twelfth Night' In Carroll Park A Sheer Delight

"Some are born great, some achieve greatness, 

and some have greatness thrust upon 'em"

Though it had rained heavily off and on all day long, the skies cleared in time for last night's premiere of Smith Street Stage's production of 'Twelfth Night' in Carroll Park. This modern twist on Shakespeare's romantic comedy was a real delight.
Under the superb direction of Beth Jastroch,  the actors turn the entire park into a giant stage and transport us to the kingdom of Illyria. The audience, young and old, seemed enthralled by the action all around them.

The actors work together effortlessly and their comedic timing is flawless.  The cast includes Mary Cavett, Ruark Downey, Kate Eastman, Laura Esposito, Michael Hanson, Patrick Harvey,  Jonathan Hopkins, Adam Lebowitz-Lockhard, Beth Ann Leone, Neysa Lonzano, Timothy McDonough, Samantha Midler, Colin Ryan, Justin Tatum and Leal Vona.

Smith Street Stage, a theatre group based in Carroll Gardens, has brought Shakespeare to Carroll Park for the last two summers, presenting 'Romeo and Juliet' in 2010 and 'Macbeth' in 2011.
