"Some are born great, some achieve greatness,
and some have greatness thrust upon 'em"
from Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night"
Though it had rained heavily off and on all day long, the skies cleared in time for last night's premiere of Smith Street Stage's production of 'Twelfth Night' in Carroll Park. This modern twist on Shakespeare's romantic comedy was a real delight.
Under the superb direction of Beth Jastroch, the actors turn the entire park into a giant stage and transport us to the kingdom of Illyria. The audience, young and old, seemed enthralled by the action all around them.
The actors work together effortlessly and their comedic timing is flawless. The cast includes Mary Cavett, Ruark Downey, Kate Eastman, Laura Esposito, Michael Hanson, Patrick Harvey, Jonathan Hopkins, Adam Lebowitz-Lockhard, Beth Ann Leone, Neysa Lonzano, Timothy McDonough, Samantha Midler, Colin Ryan, Justin Tatum and Leal Vona.
Smith Street Stage, a theatre group based in Carroll Gardens, has brought Shakespeare to Carroll Park for the last two summers, presenting 'Romeo and Juliet' in 2010 and 'Macbeth' in 2011. The performances are entirely free, just bring your own seating. The event is partly sponsored by Friends Of Carroll Park.
