No doubt the topic of estate planning for the sandwich generation will be of interest to many here in the neighborhood. If you haven't already delved into the subject, this seminar, held at the Carroll Gardens Library might be just what you need to get started.

STATE PLANNING FOR THE SANDWICH GENERATION: A SEMINAR AT THE CARROLL GARDENS LIBRARY
Sandwiched between responsibilities: caring for your children, as well as worrying about an elderly family member? Statistics show that nearly 10 million Americans are considered to be a part of the “Sandwich Generation”, with over 25% of American families being involved in both child and elder care at the same time. And while it may not seem possible to add one more item to an overstuffed to-do list, estate planning is all about “being prepared”. Financial planner Kerri Kimball is joined by attorney Alison Arden Besunder on March 6, 6:30 p.m. at the Carroll Gardens Library for a comprehensive discussion of the ins and outs of essential documents which are frequently procrastinated on.
Nearly every family has taboos about talking about money. But now is the time to tackle these issues so that our loved ones aren’t left in the dark. Some simple steps taken now can provide peace of mind that our families’ finances are secure,” says financial planner Kerri Kimball.
Topics discussed will first and foremost include how to discuss estate planning issues with elderly relatives. As many participants have children of their own, choosing a guardian to take care of your children and your children’s assets will be addressed as well. And everyone needs to protect the ability to make health care decisions. The special needs of non-citizens or dual citizens will be included.

Registration is required at http://estateplanbrooklyn.eventbrite.com/ to guarantee seating. Light refreshments will be served. The seminar will be held in the auditorium (basement) of the Carroll Gardens Library, 396 Clinton Street at Union Street. Closest subway: F train to Carroll Street.

This free event is hosted by Corcoran Group Real Estate agents Justine Torchio and Chris DiChiaro. Justine, is a native and current resident of Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn who volunteers with the Friends of the Carroll Gardens Library. Chris has been a resident of Carroll Gardens for the past seven years and has a family-owned retail boutique on Court Street. Also hosting is the Friends of the Carroll Gardens Library.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church at Clinton and Carroll Street is celebrating Mardi Gras  this Tueday with a wonderful Pancake Dinner.

Here are all the details:

The English call this day "Shrove Tuesday". "Shrove" comes from an early English word related to "shriven"--"gotten rid of", and was used in reference to sin. In olden times Christians "ate through" their larders on the last days leading up to Lent's fast so as not to waste anything. The next day “Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, a season lasting 40 days and concluding on Easter, March 30, 2013.

So come down and bring your family and join us as we eat our way through St. Paul’s larders and have one last fling before the holy and solemn season of Lent begins.  We will be serving pancakes, all the fixings, bacon and sausage from 6:30 pm. to 8:00 pm,, tickets are $5 and will be available at the door at the door. Zipper, a documentary about "greed, politics, land use and public policy' and the battle over Coney Island and the future of the 'people's playground" will be screening at the ICF Center on February 5th at 8 PM. Directed and produced by Amy Nicholson,  Zipper is a must see for all Brooklynites and for all those who miss the old Coney.

From Zipper's Facebook page:
"Small-time ride operator, Eddie Miranda, proudly runs a 38-year-old carnival contraption called the Zipper in the heart of Coney Island’s gritty amusement district. When his rented lot is snatched up by an opportunistic real estate mogul, Eddie and his ride become casualties of a power struggle between the developer and the City of New York over the future of the “People’s Playground.’’ Be it an affront to history or just the path of progress, the spirit of Coney Island is at stake. In a market-driven world where growth often trumps preservation, the Zipper may be only the beginning of what is lost."

This Friday, the Gowanus Ballroom, an exhibit space dedicated to art, music, and performance, is hosting a photo art show entitled "The Chairs The Boys Built" featuring the photographs of Jessica Bloom.
The name of the show refers to the boys of Serett Metalworks, an architectural metal work and blacksmithing shop housed in the Gowanus Industrial Park.

From an artist statement:
Over the past year, Jessica has had the pleasure of getting to know the boys of Serrett Metalworks, both professionally and personally.
The boys come from many different walks of life, from the Dominican Republic to the Southwest desert and Midwest plains. Their lives have converged here, in what was once an industrial powerhouse, the Gowanus Canal district, a dynamic zone currently immersed in an evolutionary transformation where artists cultivate themselves and new businesses for a renaissance of modern, urban economic development.

By daytime, they weld, cut, mold, forge, and sculpt staircases, decorative window coverings, railings, furniture, fences and other residential and commercial metalworks. On their own time, these boys cultivate a wide spectrum of passions and hobbies: travel, humanitarian work, art, motorcycle building.
Serret Metalworks is commissioned for some very high-end projects, from the storied Plaza Hotel to Marc Jacobs’ chic Manhattan boutique. Some of these jobs are so complex that other shops have turned the work away, yet the immense talent behind these pieces goes largely unrecognized.

Through this series of portraits, Jessica explores the individuality of the collective beauty these boys produce. The complexity of their pasts, present, and futures are epitomized through their work-worn, hands: the wrinkles, creases, dirt and dust-stained nicks and calluses. The hopes and aspirations the boys convey behind furrowed brows; enigmatic, deep gazes; and steadfast, determined poise.
The Stairs the Boys Built is a reflection of the inspiration these lives have brought Jessica. Her intention is that viewers will think twice about the manmade beauty they experience on a daily basis and consider the people and passion behind the grit.
The show also includes the works of :
Adrian Landon
Brooke Grant
Chris Bido
Ed Akers
Eric Juron
Drew Furer
Jay McDonald
Josh Young
Luke Schumacher
Serban Ionescu
Shayne Webb
