Oh, how much fun! I am more of a pétanque player, but a Bocce Tournament sounds like loads of fun. This banner showed up next to the bocce court in Carroll Park and though the park is not one of the official locations of the tournament, I sure hope some of the elderly Italian bocce-playing gentlemen from the neighborhood will take part in this event.

Annual Citywide Bocce Tournament
All Five Boroughs

Each September, New Yorkers come from all over the city and surrounding areas to participate in Parks’ annual Citywide Bocce Tournament. Teams of four compete to represent their borough in the finals and for the chance to be crowned best bocce team in the city.

This year’s 14th Annual tournament will be the biggest and best yet, with preliminaries taking place in all five boroughs and team competition expanding up to more than 80 teams.

The 2008 tournament will be held Saturday, September 20, with the finals on Sunday, September 21st (rain date is September 28th) in Staten Island. Winners receive prize money and the opportunity to ride on a float in the Columbus Day Parade.
