$750 for polluting the waters of the Gowanus Canal nine times? Even in 1950's terms, that sounds like a rather small amount of money.

The polluter? Brooklyn Union Gas, which was responsible for polluting the Public Place site, where it operated a coal gasification plant
. Brooklyn Union became Keyspan and is now National Grid.
