This Past Saturday, Long Soup Lines On Smith Street For Very First "Soup Festival"

Judging by the long "soup lines" which formed in front of some of the best known area eateries over the week-end, Smith Street's first "Soup Festival" was a huge success.
For a $5 fee, twenty restaurant owners participating in this event, allowing people to sample and judge their soup entries as they strolled along the sidewalks from Atlantic Avenue to Carroll Street.
The event was a benefit for the HS For International Studies (Baltic Street) Culinary Arts Program and the South Brooklyn Local Development Corporation.


The participating restaurants were:
Lunetta, Bar Tabac, Apartment 138, Raga, Cibao, Pane e Vino, Robin Des Bois, Athena, El Nuevo Portal, Verde, Bombay Dream, Provence en Boite, Chestnut, Savoia, Zaytoon's, Sue Perette, Cubana Cafe, Bino, The Jakewalk, and Seersucker

And the winner of Smith Street's first "Soup Festival? ? I asked Bette Stolz of the South Brooklyn Local Development Corporation, who helped organize and judge the event, for the result. She wrote back: 

"There were 3 ladles of each color awarded last night by me and Mayra Valdes (the Culinary Arts Teacher)- Gold, Silver, & Bronze.

The Gold Medals went to: Provence en Boite for his Soupe de Poissons, Sue Perette for his Butternut Squash and Lamb Merguez Soup, and Bombay Dream for his Mulligatawny Soup.

The Silver Medals went to: Verde for his Lobster Bisque, Savoia for their Pasta Fagiole Soup, and Athena for their Avgolemono Soup.

The Bronze Medals went to Pan e Vino for his Crema D'Aragosta Soup, Bino for their Minestrone Soup, and Cubana Cafe for their Chicken Soup with avocado, scallions, and more.

The judges were: 

Ariane Daguin - owner/founder of D'Artagnan Food Products,
Chris Schonberger - Associate Food Editor of TimeoutNY,
and Linda La Violette local Food Professional/ Former Gourmet Shop Owner, Caterer to Movie &TV sets.

The school made enough on the event to give the students some wonderful trips.
