We thoroughly enjoy our days on our hill in the countryside here, but we do occasionally get back to civilization for some sightseeing. A few days ago, we got into the car and drove to Vichy, a two hour ride from our house.
Vichy is one of the largest cities here in the Auvergne and is situated along the Allier river. It is mostly known as a spa because of its thermal springs.
People have visited the place for centuries to take advantage of the curative properties of these springs. Julius Cesar stopped here after he defeated Vercingetorix, the Gaul leader, in 52 B.C.
Over the centuries many famous people have visited to take a cure and to drink the waters rich in minerals, to attend its opera and its casino.
No spa treatment for us, though we did share a bottle of Vichy water at lunch with our moules frites.
