As reported earlier, the space at 349 Smith Street between Carroll Street and Second Street once occupied by Joe's Superette, will become a Mediterranean/ Greek restaurant.
According to owners Andrew Poulos and Peter Rogakos, construction is progressing nicely and if everything goes well, they hope to be open by mid-August. A wine and beer license is in the works. The new eatery will have counter service with seating both inside and outside in the backyard.
On Wednesday morning, Poulos and Rogakos met with residents from both Carroll Street and Second Street to address concern about the outdoor space. Both owners reassured those who attended the meeting that they will be respectful of their neighbors and will close the backyard space at 11 PM.
They also promised to keep the line of communication open, which was greatly appreciated.
"We would like to see you thrive here, " said resident Triada Samaras. "We need a Greek restaurant on Smith Street."

Anonymous has left the following comment on the post "Ciro's, Smith Street's Newest Italian Eatery, Now Open":
"Ugh. I live around the corner; just moved back to CG after a few years in Park Slope. Was looking forward to what I remembered as great food but now I can't figure out what's going on around here: South Slope opens spot-on restaurant after amazing spot, and Vanderbilt is now well into an impressive hit list. Don't get me started on the investment and creativity in Williamsburg and recently Bushwick.
Now Ciros? The sausage may be real in the window, but why can't we have Al Di La instead of this slapdash nonsense? Where's the style, restraint, and frankly the personal touch that EVERY OTHER NEIGHBORHOOD IN BROOKLYN churns out so seemingly effortlessly?
Anyway, if the food here is 1/2 as good as Al Di La's, I'd love to say i'll be a regular. But this decor is terrible. (Maybe it's an homage to the old neighborhood. Marco Polo II anyone?)
I wish they'd let this guy have his Oyster Bar. We need the variety. sigh. At least we have the Ramen Shop going in up the street.
I hope restauranteurs are reading this. CG looks saturated, but there's a huge need for simple, delicious restaurants."
Raga, the Indian restaurant at 142 Smith Street, seems to have been replaced by Brick Lane, another Indian eatery. Though a banner announces the 'grand opening', perhaps this is just a new name for the same business. After all, the telephone number remains the same and the menu seems to be almost identical The prices, however, have gone up.
To follow up, I recently got an email from Nitin Kaushik, Attorney-at-Law, stating:
"I am an intellectual property attorney, and I represent my client Brick Lane Curry House.I am writing to you about the June 27, 2012 post of yours available at http://pardonmeforasking.blogspot.com/2012/06/from-one-indian-restaurant-to-another.html. In your post you have included information regarding a Brick Lane restaurant in Brooklyn. I wish to bring to your attention that this restaurant in no way related to my client Brick Lane Curry House. It is an imposter trying to dilute my client’s reputation."

Carroll Gardener Jo Anne Kelly Richards was walking down DeGraw Street when she came upon a sign taped to a pole warning of apricots falling from a tree in a side yard. Sure enough, branches heavy with fruit hang over the sidewalk.
Jo Anne writes: 'Over-ripe, fallen apricots rest in peace, curb side. A guy, passing by, said to me, 'I don't know why people aren't picking them up. They are $9.99 a pound." I said, "I think they are ripe when they fall, and not particularly appetizing when they land.'
Luckily, someone had set aside some of the unblemished apricots. "I saw a purple plate, on the sidewalk, beside the fence, under the apricot tree offering three perfectly ripe, local, golden fruits,' Jo Anne says. "With gratitude for apricots, considerate neighbors, signs of falling fruit, ALL trees, conjuring up the motivation to venture out on a hot summer day, and my life in this diverse neighborhood, I adopted one of the three apricots offered."
I just walked by the tree yesterday and there are still some apricots hanging far up in the tree. What bounty. Thanks for pointing it out to us, Jo Anne.
Rob has left the following comment on the post "Young Woman Attacked On Hoyt Street Near President Street Last Friday Night At 11:30 PM":
"Remember, it was only a year ago last April that a woman was attacked and mugged on Carroll St between Bond and Hoyt sometime after 7 when there was still some daylight left. That section isn't desolate either. There always seems to be people walking their dogs late a night and people walking down President from the subway. The other weird thing is that corner isn't dark either at night because of the school across the street."
"Some are born great, some achieve greatness,
and some have greatness thrust upon 'em"
from Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night"
Though it had rained heavily off and on all day long, the skies cleared in time for last night's premiere of Smith Street Stage's production of 'Twelfth Night' in Carroll Park. This modern twist on Shakespeare's romantic comedy was a real delight.
Under the superb direction of Beth Jastroch, the actors turn the entire park into a giant stage and transport us to the kingdom of Illyria. The audience, young and old, seemed enthralled by the action all around them.
The actors work together effortlessly and their comedic timing is flawless. The cast includes Mary Cavett, Ruark Downey, Kate Eastman, Laura Esposito, Michael Hanson, Patrick Harvey, Jonathan Hopkins, Adam Lebowitz-Lockhard, Beth Ann Leone, Neysa Lonzano, Timothy McDonough, Samantha Midler, Colin Ryan, Justin Tatum and Leal Vona.
Smith Street Stage, a theatre group based in Carroll Gardens, has brought Shakespeare to Carroll Park for the last two summers, presenting 'Romeo and Juliet' in 2010 and 'Macbeth' in 2011. The performances are entirely free, just bring your own seating. The event is partly sponsored by Friends Of Carroll Park.
For more information click here and here. You can follow Smith Street Stage on Facebook here.
The play will be performed for two weeks, so make sure you don't miss it.

After British Chef Gordon Ramsey spent a week giving Mama Maria's a make-over for his "Kitchen Nightmares" show, the Italian eatery at 307 Court Street in Carroll Gardens has re-opened for business.
From the outside, it looks as though the place got a paint job, new tables and chairs. (To see 'before' photos, click here.)
According to reader Timothy, who has taken a tour after the remodel, "the menu looks great. Per Ramsay's MO, it's simplified, one page, and *much* shorter, now with only 4 or 5 pasta dishes and the same number of primori. Both the pizzeria and main dining room decor have been updated, and all dishes are made fresh, same day. The wine list is the same, but on a separate menu page, and easier to see what's offered. I can't wait to try the new menu."
An anonymous reader was less impressed and writes: "The new sign leaves much to be desired. And I saw what I assume to be new tables covered in a newspaper print that are also ugly. Usually, I think the show does a great job with the re-designs, but this isn't looking so good. I've never eaten at Mama Maria's(it never seemed too appealing), but I'd like to try it with the new menu (even if the new decor doesn't seem too promising)."
One review on Yelp gushed about the new interior of the restaurant, which "looks like a trendy-artsy graffiti muraled Brooklyn street."
Have you been? What do you think of Ramsey's make-over?
No word yet on when the show will air.

Yes, Carroll Gardens is one of the safest neighborhoods in the City, but it doesn't mean that one shouldn't be careful.
The attack on a young woman on Hoyt Street right at the corner of President Street last Friday evening at around 11:30 PM shocked residents because of its brazen nature. Though Hoyt Street can be quiet at night, there are still lots of people walking around the neighborhood at that time of the evening.
According to several block residents, this is what happened:
A young woman in her mid-20's was walking back over the Carroll Street Bridge towards Carroll Gardens from Park Slope. She was approached by a man who told her that he had lost his cell phone. He used this as a conversation starter and as a distraction. He started to follow her, then grabbed her and put her in a chokehold, covered her mouth and forced her to the ground. She managed to free herself and to scream for help. Neighbors and a dog walker immediately came to her help.
The attacker fled towards 3rd Street. He was described as "hispanic with elbow-length curly hair," wearing a white T-Shirt. 911 was called and officers of the 76th Precinct on Union Street responded.
It would appear that the police may be familiar with the suspect.
Thankfully, the woman was fine, just badly shaken. She got in a squad car with Police to try and locate the man who had attacked her.
I have reached out to the 76th Precinct and am waiting for a call back. I will update the post as soon as I have further information.

It's been a while since I checked in with stylist Brooke Hunt and her private hair studio The Bird House at 490 Court Street at the corner of Luquer Street here in Carroll Gardens. The salon is now just a bit over a year old and things have been going very well for Brooke. As a matter of fact, she just got some great news. She was just contacted by YELP because, as it turns out, The Bird House is one of the highest-rated salons on YELP in all of New York City. How cool is that? Especially for a one-person business in Brooklyn?
According to YELP, The Bird House also offers one of the best selling deals the review site has ever had.
Take advantage of that deal here.
Congratulations, Brooke.
