2008 Idiotarod Photos

Photos: Katia At Pardon Me For Asking

We should have known better. The organizers of the Idiotarod, that goofy Brooklyn shopping cart race, make it clear on their web site that this is not a spectator "sport." To that end, the starting point and the finish line of the race is one of the best kept secrets in this town.
Obviously, the four starting points listed on the organizers website were all wrong. So was the finish line. I know, because Mr. Pardon Me, Teen Son and Friend Joe drove to all of them.
And boy did we feel like idiots, when we reluctantly had to admit to ourselves that we must have missed the race.
Somewhere, on the way home, someplace on the B.Q.E., Teen Son suggested that it would be truly funny if the race were happening in our own neighborhood of Carroll Gardens instead of in Greenpoint or Williamsburg where we had checked every inch in search of the race.
Well, hahaha! Don't you know, as we were getting off the highway, we saw our first shopping cart being pushed by a bunch of bees, followed by another being guided by some skunks.
Funny, truly funny. We had stumbled upon the finish line on Columbia Street. And imagine this! One of the checkpoints was the Gowanus Canal. That means that in order to reach the end of the race, the participants had to pass right in front of our house.
Now who is the real idiot?
But, hey, at least we got to see the end.
Next year, Mr. Pardon Me And Teen Son want to participate in the race. My son already wheeled one of Idiotarod's discarded shopping carts in front of my house. Fun.
