I guess, you, my reader, will forgive me this once. Glenn, my husband, is on
the executive Committee of the Carroll Gardens Neighborhood Association.
Since there seem to be so much confusion on the the association's

CGNA Landmarking Forum

The Carroll Gardens Neighborhood Association (CGNA) has requested
NYC Planning to change the zoning of Carroll Gardens (CG) to protect
the brownstone row houses and control the scale of new development.
This request was made as a result of the overwhelming response to
questions in the survey conducted lst year by CGNA and Community Board
6. More than 85% of survey respondents expressed concern over the
size and bulk of new buildings. This was enough to spur the executive
committee to explore the options available to protect the neighborhood
from out of scale and out of character development.
The survey respondents also clearly indicated confusion over the
location of a "Carroll Gardens Historic District". The majority
incorrectly assumed that the entire CG neighborhood was protected by
the formal Landmarks Preservation designation. To clear up this
confusion, the CGNA is sponsoring a Landmarks forum. A panel of
professionals will explain what landmark designation means; the
process of designation, the benefits, liabilities, requirements and
procedures involved if landmarking has been approved. The panel will
address how landmarks designation affects both residential and
commercial owners, property values, etc. This forum will be held at
the PS58 auditorium on Monday, November 19th from 6:30 - 8:30 PM.
Questions will be answered and comments will be read as we attempt to
raise our understanding of the costs and benefits of expanding the
landmark district in Carroll Gardens. We strongly recommend that all
homeowners and interested residents attend in order to make a more
informed decision about this issue.
